Great article catch Quietman. Thank you. Even though the article was about the upcoming presidential election, it is pitiful how our beloved town has recently portrayed by objective outsiders as crumbling, in hard times, gray & insular, and mired in political troubles. Its heartbreaking. This town has been greedily bled. Bayonne citizens find themselves at a crossroads of a path of slowly spiraling decay or change. We so need change!!!

Quietman Thanks for posting the article. I am afraid that Bayonne is pretty much as it is described. For years Bayonne was thriving and considered a blue collar town. We prospered and lived the American dream. We have no real business's and Broadway is dying. What irks me more then anything is when people caried on about the containor port and how it would ruin the image of Bayonne. It would have provided so many blue collar jobs. People talk about luxury housing-condo's seem to be going up all over. The problem with that is we can't sell the houses that we have. We will be allowing abatements for housing. Our taxes and water bills have skyrocked and so far we are not assured any relief in sight. If abatements are to be given or tax breaks I would rather see then go to Broadway and try to re-establish a Main street that people enjoy and shop locally at. It's to late for a containor port. But if we are to survive and prosper then we have to attract industry to the mot. Residents of Bayonne need good paying jobs. They are not found in 99 cent store or McDonalds. Unless we change our thoughts and remember our heritage as proud blue collar workers-I don't see Bayonne changing for the better. Housing only creates city jobs- more city jobs raise our taxes. If things don't change some people will no longer be able to afford to live in Bayonne. We definetly need our politicans to stop all patronage jobs. We need to change the way independent agencies are run and they must be made accountable. People who have received there appointed positions from our previous mayor should be looked at carefully and replaced if necessary. The money that the BOE spends is an unfunny joke. All expenditures and raises should have to be approved by the city council. They are our elected officials and they should decide how our money is spent. The way the BOE is set up now and does not work for the public. What it does is fill the pockets deep of a selected few. If the mayor and council can't fix this problem then an elected board is a necessity. We should not be creating positions, we should be doing away with them or combining them. We should remember our roots and insist that the mayor and council follow the will of the people. If something is not done soon, Bayonne will retreat to being an old Jersey City or Newark. Wake up people. Let's make our voices known.

You know whats real sad, my parents moved us here from Jersey City (1977) because it was a better place to live. I'm now thinking of taking my kids and going back.

Our town's population has been decreasing, as has all the vital industry that has sustained Bayonne. Yet, Our streets are more dangerous, dirtier and the education has declined. Why build "luxury" housing, or ANY housing? There is no infrastructure to support families of higher end income. If you want to see change, look at Hoboken......its changing! All those "kids" are voters and HIGH END, thinking, well educated taxpayers. They are demanding change and input to local government. We need the same here.

How interesting: The article mentions Bob Fitzgerald, that is my cousin. Stan should know the name, right Stan? I love this line, "But a random sampling of voters in beer-drinking Bayonne showed that many are lukewarm about her candidacy." I like my beer and my wine, who should I vote for? Jude

Hey Jude! (plink, cyber nickle) When I saw Bob's name I smiled. The last time I bumped into him he was at the Masonic Lodge giving blood. We definitely live in a small town!
