Default Bayonne Bridge

According to yesterday's JJ, our bridge does not have enough clearance to allow the newer super ships to pass under it. When the Army Corps of Engineers was dregging in the Kill van Kull, did they not take this into consideration? But perhaps they did and they are soon going to unveil plans for the new "Bayonne Tunnel".

I also heard in the past about raising the height of the bridge, or tearing it down...now wouldn't building at old MOTBY a container port work just as well? My two cents...

Seriousjoker, I know that a container port is a hot political topic in Bayonne, but actually, I support it as long as traffic/rail infrastructure comes along with it. Security is truly not any more an issue on the east side of bayonne than it is across the bay in Eliz/Newark. So if a big boom comes in either place its the difference of a blink before Bayonne's annihilation. Lets be realistic, we already exist in a hot spot. A natural deep water berth, a dry dock, cranes in place already, shorter distance from the Narrows to the dock (less fuel use by ships)all make Bayonne very attractive as a port. Additionally, its not unusual for industry to move closer to the docks. Although the "east side Hook" isn't the prettiest place in the world, I'm not sure it could be cost effectively remediated for much else from days of yore industry. So why not bring industry and jobs back into the area again? My two cents too.

Thinking about Algorithm's comment regarding dredging - Even if the Army dredged the Kill to, say, 500 feet deep, wouldn't the distance between the water and the bridge remain the same?

Jack, Continued dredging of the kull allows larger ships to come in at the lower tides, when the distance between the Bayonne bridge and water is the greatest. At low tide, when these large ships come in the kull, there can be a delicate balance of the ship's draft. Its getting trickier with these large ships. Its either draft when full or bridge clearance when light loaded. The balance from the bridge to the water the the top of the water to the kull's bottom present challenges, either way.
