The thing you have to love about Google is the sense of humor. I mean I can't swim more than 2,000 miles at once, myself. Dadblog

Immigrants help NJ Real Estate market stay afloat

Posted 04-20-2008 at 09:20 PM by admin
From the Bergen Record

Immigrants help market stay afloat

Chetali Zaveri and Chitanshu Bora wanted to live the American Dream.

The couple, now in their 30s, met in India while attending school. Both wanting to pursue higher education that was limited in their native country, they moved to the United States seven years ago.

Here, Zaveri became a physical therapist, and her husband, Bora, a pharmacist. Once they started a family with a baby boy, their one-bedroom apartment in Queens began to feel cramped.

They searched in Bergen County, because Zaveri wants to make sure her son gets the educational opportunities not available in India. The family recently bought a three-bedroom, 2 1/2-bath split level in Ho-Ho-Kus.

"It was a beautiful location, and most importantly, it has the best school district for my son," she said.

Since Zaveri comes home late from work, safety is also important to her, something that Ho-Ho-Kus' suburbia does not lack.

While the family will start living their American Dream after their closing at the end of April, Cristian and Eleonora Da Silva, both in their mid-30s, have been doing it for the past two years, in Waldwick.

The couple met in Argentina while Cristian was visiting relatives. They got married after three years of dating, and Cristian brought his wife to the U.S. five years ago.

The Argentinian-American couple moved from a two-family home in Garfield into their one-family Victorian in Waldwick two years ago to raise their family; they have two young children.

"We wanted something comfortable and that we liked," said Cristian Da Silva. "Being happy with my family is what matters; this was an opportunity and we went for it."

Like Zaveri and Bora, an important factor for Eleonora Da Silva was what most suburbanites take for granted: safety.

"Now it's dangerous in Argentina, you walk down the street and you can get robbed," she said. "You don't hear as much of that happening here."

Bora and Zaveri, the Da Silvas and many other immigrant families pursuing their dream are helping to keep real estate market afloat.

According to the National Association of Realtors, two out of three households in New Jersey are being formed by foreign-born/ethnic minorities; they are projected to account for more than 50 percent of first-time home buyers by 2010. About 9 percent of the Garden State's population is represented by nationalized citizens.

BLRA meeting of 4/17: 12 million dollars, news about the Army & no new Executive Director

Posted 04-18-2008 at 08:50 AM by neilbarton
Who doesn’t like a nice surprise? The public, that’s who. Last night BLRA commissioner Fitch bemoaned being “pounded by questions” from the public. However, what can the good commissioner expect from the public when there appear to be surprises around every corner with the BLRA?

Surprise #1: Congratulations, you just won $12million dollars! Well… not exactly. No doubt, in concert with the city, the BLRA decided that it was time to pay the city for the services that it has rendered. These services add up to about $14million according to last nights meeting. However, strangely enough, the BLRA was never billed for these prior to last night’s meeting. Suddenly, there they are. But there is a problem, because the BLRA can only pay $12million. So the city decides it will only bill $12million. But... what about the United States Army? Isn’t this against their edict to stop all transfers of money between the city & BLRA until their investigation is complete? That leads us to…

Surprise#2: The negotiations between the BLRA & the Army. Many people, including this website, have been asking city officials about the status of the negotiations. However, we have gotten very little back, other than that the negotiations are ongoing. Suddenly Attorney Bowman decided to divulge at the meeting that he had in fact just come from the Pentagon that very day, and that low and behold the Army is aware of this money transfer. Or is it? There seemed to be doubt about the ability of Mr. Bowman to answer the question from some in the audience. We were certainly left with the impression the Army approves.

Surprise #3: The Jersey Journal decided to wake up from its slumber of inactivity and inability to cover local politics just long enough to report on the BLRA possibly picking a new Executive Director at last night’s meeting. Certainly there has been some buzz about Mr. Cliff Doll, currently with the school board, who is retiring, being a candidate for that position. This, in the Advocate’s opinion, would be a poor choice. Not only was there a news paper article on the subject of a new BLRA Executive Director, but there was also an agenda item on last nights meeting! However, surprise… the vote would not be taken last night. Does this mean the BLRA felt the heat coming on a possible Doll yes vote and decided to take a step back? One can only wonder.

I attempted, in vain it seems, to impress upon the BLRA member that they need only TELL us about these things BEFORE these meetings. Then perhaps it won’t be such a surprise to us poor misguided members of the public at these meetings. Then perhaps we won’t be so confused when we ask our questions, and perhaps Mr. Fitch can avoid the “pounding” that he obviously does not enjoy.
...

BLRA Meeting - Bond Swaps!

Posted 04-17-2008 at 08:03 AM by HappyPolski
The meeting will be at 6PM this evening, April 17. Two topics expressed in today's JJ:

1.) New ED might be announced at tonight's meeting. Personally, I plan on sending an email to Ted, Tony and the Mayor about my opinions on the matter.First, Doll should be excluded. He wanted to retire from the BOE, let him retire. Don't give him a new title and possibly another pension. And, although I don't know who are the other candidates, but I feel that Joe Nichol's have made an attempted at righting the BLRA. He should be given the title!

2.) It's that same old song - Bond Swaps! While I'm against them for this one time I would agree to ONE, LAST swap. Going forward we should do whatever is necessary to trim the fat and get our budget once again lean and mean. Barring that, the administration should increase taxes for whatever the amount necessary to balance our budget. In this way the BLRA can base decisions from a position of strength. We would no longer need to deal with carpet baggers!I'll be at the meeting. Stop by and say 'HI!' (Third row from the rear, right side!)
