In case you missed it, the Bayonne City Council held a special meetign tonight at 6PM, where they promptly went into a closed door session to discuss budgetary matters. When they returned nearly 2 hours later, it was to authorize: 1) a special meeting on Thursday May 22nd, at 5:30 PM for a public hearing on passing the budget & 2) to add to the Wednesday May 21st council agenda an item amending the shared services agreement with the BLRA to include an additional 23million dollars.
The council is doing these 2 things because currently the city faces a $40million shortfall for this year & last years budget combined. The received $10million from the BLRA already for "shared services" and, with this additional amendment passed, we will receive an additional $23million. However, that only adds up to $33million. We are still missing $7million. The only way we can get approval to carry over that $7million dollars and to perform the newly redesigned money swap with the BLRA is to get approval from the Local Finance Board, which is under the Department of Community Affairs which is now run by former Bayonne Mayor Joe Doria.
