Who is behind the NJ.com deletions?
Posted 01-31-2008 at 04:00 PM by neilbarton
As most who read this website know, there have bee a rash of comment deletions & user deactivations on the Bayonne forum at NJ.com. Initially, because I was not part of this sweep, I had thought that what was being deleted was of some sort of illegal nature, or perhaps inappropriate content. To be sure, this did occur from time to time. However, on 1/16 I was responding to someone who had been deleted/deactivated and had just come back from "forum jail" as it is called on NJ.com. My punishment for replying to this person and acknowledging that he was deleted was swift! I was deleted and jailed. I took the time to write an email to the forum management. I was sent back a one sentence email stating simply:
from: forums@nj.com
date: 1/17/2008
Please review our Community Rules
http://www.nj.com/forums/index.ssf?rules.html
Note that posts regarding deletions and other elements of forum policy are not permitted.
Thank you,
Interactivity Management
Okay, I thought, they have a rule against speaking about being deleted. Fair enough. I couldn't imagine that people are being unfairly deleted, I mean, there were rules and they needed to be followed. I accepted the response on face value. Until....
Jan 29th, I responded to a discussion about firefighting and the shifts people work in Bayonne. BFD is on a24 hour shift, some were proposing an 8 hour shift, others the 24. I attempted to find a middle ground, and posted an article about the 10/14 shift system, which seems to be backed by many in firefighting circles. I was deleted and deactivated again.
So I wrote another email (again under the naive assumption that others were breakign rules, and I was simply just being swept up in it all):
To: forums@nj.com
date: 1/29/2008
Questions/Comments: My account "KaptanKa0s" that I used on the Bayonne NJ.com forum has been deactivated (again!) yet I am one of the few people who posts respectfully on this forum. I actually sign my posts with my real name, I actually LIST my email in my profile. I cannot fathom why my account is being deactivated? I violated no rules. I understand that many on that forum do violate rules, but I am not one of them. I would like to have my account reactivated rather than creatign a new name, which many on the forum seem to do, no matter how many times they are deleted!
I received this response:
From: forums@nj.com

At this point I am left scratching my head. So I decide to respond:
To: forums@nj.com
date: 1/29/2008
With all due respect I have reviewed the rules. And I know what I write, it was merely a discussion of work hours for the fire department. I used no foul language, did not discuss any issues that violate the rules. I am 110% sure of this. Some of that forum are strtign to belive that posts are being removed due to merely speaking about political issues. I hope that this is not the case. I would like my account unblocked please.
I got no response to this... but magically my account was unjailed. I logged back on to the forum and posted again. I was careful NOT to mention having been deleted in my post. I merely posted that it was time that we all had a place to express ourselves freely, and that I was considering creating a new board to do so with. WHAM! Deleted and deactivated. A clear violation of their own rules. I emailed the following:
To: reply@nj.com
date: 1/29/2008
Wow... again I have had a thread of mine deleted, when all I did was talk about creating a new board. I specifically did not mention having been deleted and having my account blocked from yesterday. I said that due to the policies here, perhaps we may want to look into a board where we can post and not violate policies.
While I was orginally supportive of the crackdown you guys were taking on some really vulgar and uneccessary posts that were going on in the bayonne forum, now I can only conclude that the deletions and blocking you are enacting are possibly politically motivated or just plain vindictive.
Please inform me of who is in charge of overseeing the forums, I would like to write a letter directly to this person and lodge a complaint.
Aside from that, as I said in my post that was deleted, I will begin to create a new forum so that we can speak of political issues in Bayonne and be unmolested by draconian deletions that violate your own policies.
At that point I did create a new name, and I decided to begin telling people about this website. I have spent my own time & my own money on this website because I believe it is extremely important that people have an opportunity to express themselves politically free of molestation from authority.
I can say for certain that I do not know who is behind the MASS deletions on the NJ.com Bayonne forum. However i have my suspicions. They are two fold. First, I suspect there is a power happy overzealous systems administrator at NJ.com who is deletion happy. Secondly, I think he has focused on the Bayonne forum because there have been multiple complaints from certain political factions within the city of Bayonne. I know I have no proof of this. However, I have seen how Joe Olezewski (I may have spelling wrong) has acted on the forum. He works for Tony Chiappone, a politician with whom I have no gripe with. However it appears as if Joe O (who has in my opinion taken many intractable and incorrect views) was caught using multiple screen names on the NJ.com Bayonne forum. I cannot prove this, as I am not the systems admin on nj.com. However, it seems entirely likely that in retaliation of the negative responses he was getting from some of his opinions, he reported multiple posts as inappropriate to NJ.com. I believe the repeated flagging of posts as "inappropriate" has caused an overzealous Systems Admin to focus on the Bayonne forum.
I would invite ANYONE from NJ.com OR Joe O himself to refute these opinions. After all, a free exchange of ideas is what this website is all about.

judeamerickNeil,
I agree on the overzealous admin. But, wasn't there a mention of the NJO board from Malloy a few weeks back? I am having a hard time thinking the mass deletions, lockouts, etc. and Malloy's comments are coincidental. Jude |

LDePintoI too have been blocked under all my usernames and all my email addresses have been locked. I've been particularly cautious in the past week or so with my post content(many of which I have copied and saved)but have been blocked anyway. I have yet to receive any reply to my correspondence to the systems admin. Actually, think how pathetically frightened these folks must be of simple voting taxpayers and citizens.
NJ.com doesn't own the only regional newspapers, nor are their advertisers products the only ones available......... How can a media group condone malicious censorship? |

I agree with Jude. I have been on the forum for three years and I was never put in jail. I made a few political comments mentioning Malloy and the yes men and I was put in jail. For the first time in my life my account was frozen. My husband Becket wrote that he felt it was political and his account was frozen. He never went to jail but was totally locked out. He has written and sent a letter certified to the publisher of the Star Ledger. No reply has come as of yet. After going through several names I used the name Good Angel. As long as I made no political statements, I was fine. As soon as I made a statement that Tony and Gary are the only two who seem to do anything and said I would like action from Malloy and the others-poof GoodAngel was frozen. I believe it is politcal and I don't think Joe is behind it. I also do not understand how city can keep using different variations of the same name and be back on before 24 hours. Any one else myself, mawg purr can not use any variations of the name without it being frozen. Figure that one out. |

seriousjokerThen we are to assume that the Doria political machine is somewhat behind this...well, we can say what we want here; and frankly speaking, the person or persons behind the censorship can go to hell...they are traitors to the American belief in Free Speech...

cityeditionSeeind as how my name had neve been deleted until I caught Olszewski posting as aveCguy and reposted this:
23634. as much as Olszewski... by cityedshere, 1/26/08 18:57 ET ... "concerns" himself with the Matrix report he'll never have any input to how the city's run. ohonestyNothing is obvious. Any one could have logged in as AveC guy to purposely frame him. The only thing that is obvious is that someone is vicious enough to hurt many people.

JoeOlszewskiSorry City, nice try.
like I posted on previously on 1/26/08 myself Tony and robert Mays had gone to forman mills to meet Osi Imanuyra to get an autograph. It was over at 6pm by the time i returned my items ( because i missed the signing, time ran out)and got to the car it was around 6:30-6:40 drove back to jersey city via 1&9 and tonnelle stopped for food and observed Doria and family, then went home do the math impossible to have posted at that time on that date. i requested someone close to Doria (lot of his lackies on NJ.COM)call him and see if he was there. If city or anyone else doesn't belive it so be it. |

cityeditionHonesty,
you're wrong. Not "anybody" can sign in as aveCguy, and Olszwski, your supposed timelines mean nothing. It's called an alibi, and in this case it's one that just doesn't hold up. Sorry, but there's no getting around this: 23634. as much as Olszewski... by cityedshere, 1/26/08 18:57 ET ... "concerns" himself with the Matrix report he'll never have any input to how the city's run. Ever. 23634.1. city I never said I would by avenueCguy, 1/26/08 19:01 ET Re: as much as Olszewski... by cityedshere, 1/26/08 you seem very defensive. I addressed you in a post and you answered. Make up all the excuses and alibis you want. You too Honesty, the post speaks for itself. The minute I picked up on this and brought attention to it the mass deletions started and they were all posts commenting on this issue. Go figure. |

cityeditionHonesty,
What's the the mother hen routine with the endless defenses of Olszewski? There's a post he can't deny and all of a sudden "anybody" can sign on as aveCguy? I don't think so. The simple explanation is the ONLY logical one. Olszewski addressed a post to him and forgot to log off as aveCguy, it's that simple. There's no conspiracy, there's no magic that allows "anyone" to sign on as aveCguy. Olszewski can drop all the names he wants to, (and let's not forget in took him a full two days to come up with his timeline alibi) it doesn't change what we all read: 23634. as much as Olszewski... by cityedshere, 1/26/08 18:57 ET ... I believed all along that Ave.C guy was Bayguy. No one had proof that Joe is Ave C. guy Whoever AveC guy is could have been on the forum and at the appropriate time and spoke in the first person. It's over City Time to discuss important topics. |

cityeditionHonesty,
there is NO reason for any one but Olszewski to answer a post to Olszewski in the first person. None. I believe that in an earlier post you said I was "enraged " at your endless defense of Olszewski. No doubt that was meant to infer that I'd have a reason to "set up" Olszewski. Wrong on both counts. I'm not enraged at all, why should I be? I'm not the one being mislead by Olszeski, you are. |

The censorship, no matter what the source, on NJ.com is ridiculous. |
