2 on council call for making Rogers fire chief Friday, March 28, 2008
By RONALD LEIRJOURNAL STAFF WRITER
The top-ranked candidate for Bayonne fire chief has at least two members of the City Council in his corner, although the choice is strictly up to interim Mayor Terrence Malloy, who interviewed the contenders on Wednesday. Deputy Chief Gregory J. Rogers, who placed first on a state Department of Personnel test for chief, sounded hopeful about his chances although he'll be up against his boss, current Acting Chief Patrick Boyle, who was third on the test. Deputy Chief Joseph Hurley was second. Under DOP regulations, the city can pick from the top three scorers but needn't select the person with the highest score. Rogers said: "I have been with the Bayonne Fire Department for 27 years and have risen by merit through all the ranks. I come highly qualified . (and) I'm excited at the prospect of serving the citizens of Bayonne as their new chief, and will work with the current administration and council to provide services in a responsible manner." Boyle, a 29-year Fire Department employee and a veteran, declined comment, and Hurley couldn't be reached. Malloy, who has until June 20 to name a permanent chief, doesn't need City Council ratification of the appointment, but Councilman-at-large Anthony Chiappone and Third Ward Councilman Gary LaPelusa are pressing the mayor to promote Rogers. "It would be a travesty if the No. 1 guy doesn't get the job," Chiappone said. "Gregory Rogers should be appointed. . The public needs to be shown that we're doing things the right way." And LaPelusa said: "I'm not in favor of the 'Rule of Three.' I'd urge the mayor to go with No. 1 on the list." First Ward Councilman Ted Connolly and Second Ward Councilman John Halecky each said they'd trust the mayor's judgment. Council President Vincent Lo Re Jr. didn't return phone messages.

SloppyJoeSo lets review, the Interim Mayor (remember we had out vote taken away for Mayor by Doria & he hand picked a successor) wants to make the Provisional Chief, Chief of fire department (appointed by Doria) when we have a certified Chief's list.
This is why our town is so screwed up financially in the 1st place. We have Doria Lackeys on the BLRA, The FD and in city hall. This needs to be stopped and the 1st step in reclaiming our town is by giving the number 1 man on the list the Chief's spot. It reads funny that the Interim Mayor wants to appoint the Provisional Fire Chief by skipping 2 highly qualified men for a position. This sends out a BAD message to the city saying no matter how hard you work, and study, you will and can be politically stepped over for an earned position by a corrupt system. Let's clean up the system and start doing the right things in Bayonne again. Show the tax payers that we are trying to clean up corruption in the city and start by giving the NUMBER 1 man the job. I know city hall reads these boards and report to Malloy, and I will now say, I always respected Malloy and believe he is a very educated and credible man. I hope he shows the people of Bayonne how just and fair of a man and leader he is. I believe he will do right and choose NUMBER 1, but in the case he does not, his credibility within the city and to its residents will be shot. I then will believe he has no honor, and has fallen in with crooked politicians, and is following in Doria's steps of patronage job appointees. At this point I believe Malloy is an honorable man with the best interests of the city at heart. Please Mayor don't prove me wrong! |

HappyPolskiIt's commendable that you’ve taken the effort to post this entry. What’s the possibility of racketing it up another level? Every one, email or call our representatives to let them know how you feel. Right now it’s one lone voice in the wind. Someone taking the message to the Mayor is still one lone voice in the wind. Let’s give them a torrent of howling wind!
My email will be heading out later in the day. The City web site allows emails to be sent to Mayor Malloy. |

ohonestyIt was a good article and I appreciate it being put on this forum. Thanks Stan for suggesting the people e-mail their opinions. The more people who get involved and make known their feeling just may give the mayor and council food for thought. I find it strange that two of the councilmen don't have e-mail addresses. Maybe they could care less what the people think and don't want to be bothered.

cityeditionSloppy Joe,
Looks like it's time for you to stop knocking Malloy. Your "review" from post 1 in this thread was wrong. |
