Police said they were looking for the child's father, who was also the victim's most recent boyfriend. They said they did not know if he was the attacker, but want to talk to him.
Police said the discovery was made at 7 a.m. Monday at the intersection of Hart Street and Lewis Avenue in the borough's Bedford-Stuyvesant section.
According to police, the woman was putting the 1-year-old in the car or tending to the baby with the door open when she was attacked.
The baby was strapped inside an infant car seat, and was removed to Woodhull Hospital. It was not immediately known if the child was a boy or a girl.
