A day after a steel plate toppled from the Goldman Sachs construction site onto a Little League field, the Bloomberg administration yesterday said it is adding 63 positions to the Buildings Department to enforce construction safety and improve oversight. The new hires - 56 of them inspectors and administrators - are part of a $5.3 million initiative aimed at construction monitoring. Acting Buildings Commissioner Robert LiMandri said the move will allow for "more surprise inspections." Meanwhile, kids returned to Battery Park Field yesterday, a day after a large steel plate landed amid young baseball players. League President Mark Costello said he is working to have the city bar construction while children are playing there.
